PET/CT
Scan What
is a PET/CT scan? A
PET scan or Positron Emission Tomography is new
imaging technology that detects cancerous tumors
earlier and more accurately. The PET scan is used
in breast cancer patients to see if there is any
evidence of cancer in other areas of their body,
and determine the effectiveness of treatment. When
combined with a CT scan, a more accurate description
of the location of the abnormality can be given.
How is a PET/CT
scan performed?
You will be given an injection
of a substance that has a combination of sugar
and a small amount of radioactive substance. Since
cancer cells take up or absorb sugar faster than
other tissues in the body, the radioactive sugar
can help locate a cancer tumor. After receiving
the drug, you will be asked to lie on a table,
which gradually moves through the PET scanner
multiple times. The exam will take about 30 minutes.
A radiologist will interpret the images from the
exam.
How should I prepare for
the exam?
The following instructions are
for the non-diabetic patient. If you are diabetic,
your doctor will give you special instructions.
• You should not eat for 6
hours prior to the study. Completely avoid gum,
sugar, and caffeine.
• You may drink water, but no other liquid
is allowed.
• Wear warm, loose fitting clothing such
as sweats, flannel shirt, etc.
• You may take your regularly scheduled
medications if they can be tolerated on an empty
stomach.
• No exercise or repetitive/vigorous activity
for 24 hours prior to the exam day.
• You should be able to lie flat on your
back for one hour or more.
How do I schedule my exam?
We will fill out the order form
and send it to the Radiology Department. You will
be called by the Radiology Department to schedule
your test and give you any additional information
or instructions you may need. They will also tell
you where to check-in on the day of your test.
When will I receive
my results?
The results will be available
to your doctor within 48 hours. Your doctor will
then call you with the results.
Is the PET/CT scan covered
by insurance?
The PET scan is covered by Medicare
and most managed care plans. However, it is always
advisable to check with your insurance company
prior to taking the exam.
